It’s a classic Old Team v New Team showdown this Saturday, so let’s talk for a moment about second-school college gymnastics head coaches.

As a group, the currently active DI head coaches own a 68-16 record against the teams where they used to be head coach. Now, a whole lot of that is thanks to KJ Kindler, who is 36-0 against Iowa State since she moved on to Oklahoma. (If you want to be technically accurate, it’s 35 wins and 1 tie, but that tie was for the second advancing spot from regionals in 2007, and Oklahoma won the tiebreak over Iowa State.)

That’s by far the most wins for any coach against their old team, though top records also belong to Jay Clark, who is 11-1 against Georgia since becoming LSU head coach (was undefeated until this season), as well as Tanya Ho, who is 7-0 against Alaska since taking the job at UC Davis.

Stanford’s Tabitha Yim brings up the middle with an even 6-6 record against Arizona since moving back to Stanford as head coach. With the teams no longer in the same conference, who knows when we’ll get a deciding 13th result.

The only losing records for currently active head coaches are from Joanne Bowers at San Jose State, who is 0-4 against Washington, and from Danna Durante, whose three-team head coach history gives her the most complicated record of the bunch. As Georgia head coach, Durante was 2-0 against her former team Cal, but since moving on to North Carolina, Durante is 0-2 against Georgia and 0-3 against Cal.

Of the 11 currently active heads who have coached meets agains the schools where they used to be the head, 7 have winning records, 2 have even records, and 2 have losing records. So the pressure is on.
