The American Cup is set for a historic return as a mixed team event in 2026, with USA Gymnastics announcing Friday a star-studded initial nominative roster for the meet.
More than 12 Olympians and 23 World Championship athletes are expected to compete on the evening of March 7, as the prestigious event celebrates its 50th anniversary after a six-year hiatus. The Nastia Liukin Cup will be held in conjunction with the meet and takes place the afternoon of March 7.
Hosted at Lee’s Family Forum in suburban Las Vegas, the 2026 American Cup marks the first time the competition has been held since 2020 and signals its return to the global gymnastics calendar in a bold new way.
A star-studded international field
Following the nominative registration deadline, we now have an idea of who will take the mat from Japan, Great Britain, Brazil, China, Spain, and Mexico. Every participating nation plans to bring gymnasts with Olympic and/or world championship experience, underscoring the prestige of this year’s event.
The American team will be named at the conclusion of Winter Cup, which is set for February 21-22 in Louisville, Kentucky. In addition, while seven countries are confirmed to be competing in Vegas, an eighth country could still be added in the coming weeks.
Among the most notable names currently registered:
- Daiki Hashimoto (Japan) – Four-time Olympic medalist and 12-time world medalist
- Zhang Boheng (China) – 2024 Olympic triple medalist and four-time world medalist
- Qiu Qiyuan (China) – 2024 Olympic silver medalist and 2023 world champion on uneven bars
- Zhang Qingying (China) – 2025 world champion on beam and all-around bronze medalist
- Vitaliy Guimaraes (Brazil) – Former Oklahoma gymnast and 2022 Winter Cup champion (USA), began representing Brazil in 2025 and made his Worlds debut
Mixed team format offers Olympic preview
The 2026 American Cup is a mixed team competition (AmCup was previously part of the all-around World Cup circuit), allowing fans an early look at a potential format for the new mixed team event at the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles. Each country may name up to three men and three women (plus alternates), with no more than two athletes of each gender competing on any single apparatus.
Per USA Gymnastics, the official format is as follows:
- Up to 8 teams
- 3 rounds of competition
- Round 1: 8 teams
- Round 2: 6 teams
- Round 3: 4 teams
- 2 men, 2 women per team compete each round
- Men’s events: FX, PB, HB
- Women’s events: UB, BB, FX
This format emphasizes team strategy, depth, and versatility, adding a new layer of excitement for both athletes and spectators.
U.S. team selection still to come
The final American Cup roster remains subject to change. The U.S. team will be determined following the 2026 Winter Cup, scheduled for February 21–22 in Louisville, Kentucky.
