Kaylia Nemour is the top qualifier into today’s AA final, about a half point ahead of Skye Blakely in second. Nemour is the top-scoring AAer in the world this year but had errors on bars and beam in qualification, while also exceeding expectations on vault with a strong DTY.
Roshchina and Colas qualified in 3rd and 4th, with Ke QQ and Zhang QY just behind them. Claire Pease is in the second rotation group, though her score from the team final would have been the top total if it had happened in qualification. After a rough first day, Sugihara is down in the floor group. But, you know, Sugihara.
Peacock went with Skye Blakely as the header photo for today’s stream, so props for selecting someone who is in the actual competition. That is a genuine accomplishment in gymnastics I guess, considering the FIG still uses Simone’s beam on the website for streaming apparatus world cups (Simone allllwaayysss competed at challenge cups, you guys). Remember when NBC used a picture of Sarah Persinger for all their Rio streams, and we were like…ummmm??? Because I do. Our Star of the Rio Olympics, Sarah Persinger.
Anyway, let’s get this show on the road, shall we? I’ve reached the point of musing about Georgia gymnasts who have been retired for over a decade, and no one has even fallen yet.
Coverage has begun. Roadddddd to Losssss Angeeellllesssssss.
Does the worlds mascot have fire for hair? Did not one even trip walking down the stairs? Uh oh, going to be a mess of a final.
Rotation 1
Prat – BB – France – loso mount, very nice – pause before bhs loso loso series but strong as well – switch to switch 1/2 to bhs, good combo speed, great back leg on first switch – side aerial to split jump, small squeeze to hold it – wolf double, good – side somi, comfortable – double tuck, deep but hit, step back. Excellent one but just 12.9. We’re smashing D score today too. Switch 1/2 is over?
Glotova – UB – inbar 1/2 to piked jaeger, clean, good – inbar full to stalder tkatchev piked to pak, good – maloney to gienger, good amplitude, leg separation, short hs on high – FTDT, step back. 14.333
Roshchina vaulted 14.033.
Sugihara – FX – Japan – double L turn around well – DLO, hit, little pike down, little bounce back – back 1.5 through to double tuck, hop back – switch ring to tour jete 1/2, around well – memmel turn – back 2.5 to layout, landst OOB and short with a hop back, that will hurt – double pike is great and stuck. 13.400 is useful, but not the 13.9 she can do. Only got 0.1 for OOB not 0.3 though.
Blakely vaulted 14.200.
Welp, I’m sure we’ll see whatever happened to Kaylia on vault, but the AA just changed. 12.366.
The American Experience: Watching a commercial for a Disney cruise while the most important thing is happening instead.
14.033 bars for Visser. 13.066 on the Tsuk full for Zhang. 13.133 floor for Martin.
No, we’ll just ignore what happened to Kaylia. These are world feed decisions, not NBC decisions, but y’all, just an absolute lack of awareness of the actual competition.
Pease – UB – USA – front stalder 1/2 to inbar full to inbar, loses rhythm but keeps going – shap to tkatchev is hit – pak, good height – stalder shap 1/2 is good – short hs – toe 1/2 to double front 1/2, absorbs to hold the stick. Some handstands and back position and rhythm, so not her smoothest, but a hit. 13.833 is down on her potential.
We remember vault is an event, Roshchina with a very good DTY, leg crossing but only a little hop.
Scott – BB – Australia – switch mount, connects to switch and straddle well – layout 2 foot is off line and falls – resumes with a nice wolf double – front tuck, hop forward – double pike, step back.
Let’s see Blakely’s vault for 6 months ago – hit DTY but a little too hoppy steppy on landing – a couple little bounces and some direction, good dynamics
Oh, now let’s see Kaylia’s vault – overcooked the round-off and punched on the collar instead of the springboard, only did a Yurchenko layout. Devastating. All I want in the world now is for Kaylia to still win with a 12.366 vault.
Seeing Zhang’s vault, lunge back on Tsuk full, lots of pike.
