Kailin Chio saved her best for LSU’s last regular season meet.
The sophomore was perfect – absolutely perfect – inside the PMAC on Friday night, scoring three perfect 10s for the three routines she competed on vault, beam, and floor. Those scores led the Tigers to a home win over Arkansas, 198.075-197.100.
Chio rested bars, so it was a perfect 30 on the night.
Fans will always wonder what if? Chio had done bars– would it have been the elusive perfect 40? Chio has never earned a perfect 10 on bars – the one event keeping her from the coveted gym slam – so it was unlikely. Still, head coach Jay Clark is probably kicking himself for not throwing her in the lineup now, just in case!
Georgia’s Karin Lichey is the only gymnast to have earned a perfect 40 in NCAA gymnastics history. She achieved the feat in the Bulldogs’ meet against Kentucky on February 23, 1996.
Chio’s record night came almost exactly three years after LSU great Haleigh Bryant earned three 10s at home against West Virginia on March 10, 2023.
Bryant was on hand to watch her former teammate’s performance as she transitioned from athlete to LSU assistant coach in July 2025. Bryant coaches beam, so she had a front row seat as Chio joined her in becoming just the second LSU gymnast to ever score three perfect 10s in one meet
Chio is the seventh NCAA gymnast to score three or more perfect 10s in one meet, joining Lichey, Bryant, Kristen Kenoyer (Utah), Mohini Bhardwaj (UCLA), Jamie Dantzscher (UCLA), and Jordan Bowers (Oklahoma).
While it’s hard to predict how the postseason will go, Chio has had arguably the best regular season of any NCAA gymnast this year. She has score nine perfect 10s (two on vault, five on beam, and two on floor), bringing her career total to 10. She is also ranked No. 1 in the all-around and on vault and beam.
